This was the last new episode to air before Christmas in 1991.

(Some future non-Christmas-related episodes, like Season 20’s “The Burns and the Bees”, have used similar Christmas references in the opening.)

In 2016 mom took me out to lunch with Brittany Martin and it was raining and snowing outside, I had this cold which gave me the aches and the flu, my dad said “Russ, I’m taking you Christmas shopping” and I said “In a minute dad, I’m making my Christmas present for Kane and Peyton.” We went to target to get me a new Xbox 360 and father said “This’ll be our little secret so don’t tell mom” in the electronics aisle, I saw a sale of Simpsons DVDs on sale during the holiday season at Target.

In Simpsons Roasting on an open Fire, the episode had no chalkboard gag and no couch gag, the screen reads “The Simpsons Christmas Special” and the episode begins with the Christmas pageant at Springfield Elementary school and a group of students just finished singing “O Little Town of Bethlehem.” Then Principal Skinner introduces Santas of Many Lands by the 2nd grade class, which is based on a report Matt Groening actually did when he was in second grade. Then he introduces the fourth grade class singing a medley of Christmas carols and Bart interrupts by singing “Jingle bells, Batman smells Robin laid an egg, the Batmobile broke its wheel and the Joker got away.”

I have the book on the first episode of the Simpsons and at the beginning, the Springfield shopper has given the Springfield elementary school Christmas pageant four and a half stars.
